Can you remove AI watermarks?
A straight answer about which AI watermarks can be removed, which cannot, and how to tell when a tool is overselling itself.

Yes for some, no for others — and which is which is entirely predictable once you know where the signal is stored. This guide gives you the rule.
The rule
If it is in the metadata, it can be removed and the removal can be verified. If it is in the pixels, it cannot be removed by a metadata tool and nothing on this site can confirm otherwise.
That is the whole thing. The rest is applying it.
What can be removed
C2PA manifests and Content Credentials. Stored in a dedicated container structure. Removing it is a matter of rewriting the container without it. Verifiable by re-scanning. One caveat below.
EXIF, including GPS. The block cameras and phones write. Contains coordinates, device make and model, timestamps, and sometimes your name. Fully removable, with one deliberate exception — the rotation tag, which we keep by default so your photo does not display sideways.
XMP packets. Including AI declarations like DigitalSourceType: trainedAlgorithmicMedia. Removable, including the Extended XMP that spans multiple JPEG segments.
PNG text chunks. Where Stable Diffusion writes your full prompt, seed and sampler settings, and where ComfyUI stores an entire workflow graph. Removable, and worth checking — most people have no idea it is there. Our AI Metadata Remover targets this specifically.
IPTC records and JPEG comments. Removable.
Invisible Unicode in text. Zero-width characters, bidi controls, tag characters. Removable, while preserving the joiners emoji legitimately need.
What cannot be removed
SynthID and other pixel-embedded watermarks. The signal is part of the image content. A metadata cleaner copies image data byte-for-byte, so it cannot affect them. Designed to survive re-saving, screenshots, compression and moderate cropping.
Statistical text watermarks. Encoded in a model’s word choices, not in any character. Removing invisible Unicode does nothing to them.
Anything a provider holds in their own database. This is the C2PA caveat. Durable Content Credentials pair the manifest with an invisible watermark and a fingerprint stored server-side. Strip the manifest and a matching service can still re-associate the provenance. You have cleaned your copy of the file, not the record of it.
How to spot an overselling tool
A few reliable signals.
It claims to remove something it cannot detect. If a tool has no SynthID detector, it cannot verify SynthID removal — so any success confirmation is decoration. Ask what measurement produced it.
It says “not detected” for everything, with no category for “we cannot tell”. The distinction between we looked and found nothing and we have no way to look is the entire ballgame, and a tool that collapses them is not being straight with you.
It promises “100% undetectable” or “defeats every AI detector.” Nobody can make that claim, because nobody controls every detector.
It uploads your file while advertising privacy. Open the network panel and watch.
What we actually do
Our cleaners remove every metadata-based signal, then scan their own output and report the difference. A signal is marked Removed only when a second, independent scan can no longer find it — never because a cleaner said so.
Signals we cannot measure are marked Unable to verify, permanently, and never appear in the removed list. That is deliberate: it is the difference between a tool you can reason about and one you have to trust.
If you genuinely need unwatermarked content
Produce it differently. For images, that means a generator that does not watermark, or your own camera. For text, substantial rewriting in your own words — enough to change the token choices, not just paraphrase around them.
And separately from any of this: removing provenance data does not remove disclosure obligations. Platforms and jurisdictions with AI-disclosure rules do not care what your metadata says.
Frequently asked questions
What is the single most useful thing I can remove?
EXIF, if privacy is your concern — GPS coordinates and device identifiers are the highest-stakes data in a typical photo. Prompt metadata in PNGs is a close second.
Are tools that promise SynthID removal scams?
At best they remove metadata and describe it inaccurately. A tool that cannot detect a watermark cannot verify removing it, so any confirmation it shows is not based on measurement.
Does re-saving an image remove watermarks?
It usually removes metadata, since many editors discard what they do not understand. It does not remove pixel-embedded watermarks.
